I think this has recently been contradicted by the novels and was definitely not presented as such in anime filler (like in the anime version of Aizen meeting Barragan), but my understanding from how it was discussed in the manga was always that Aizen's ritual to put people under hypnosis was this really long and complicated affair, given how it's described as a hypnosis ritual.
